There are various breeding systems or methods that have been tried and tested over many years for the breeding of dogs, such as Labrador Retriever puppies. And which include linebreeding, inbreeding, outcrossing, and outbreeding.   Each of these are briefly discussed below.

Linebreeding

The Linebreeding method of breeding used by dog breeders is that involving the mating dogs that have common ancestor/s, and which the dogs being mated are more than one generation apart (eg cousins, grandson to grand-daughter, etc).   The aim of this system is to strengthen and reproduce the desirable traits from the common quality ancestor/s.   This method of dog breeeding is used and/or recommended by various dog breeders, veterinarians, etc, and in our opinion, is the preferred system to use.   Please note that our breeding stock are a number of generations apart.

Inbreeding

The Inbreeding method of breeding used by dog breeders is that involving the mating of closely related dogs (eg father to daughter, etc).   We believe that this method of dog breeding possesses unacceptable risks, and which render it unacceptable.

Outcrossing

The Outcrossing method of breeding used by dog breeders is that involving the mating of dogs that are not related, but are bred together in an attempt for each of the dog's qualities etc to complement the other's (eg a short bitch is mated with a tall sire, etc).   We believe that this system of mating produces puppies of a lower standard than that of linebreeding.

Outbreeding

The Outbreeding method of breeding used by dog breeders is that involving mating dogs that are not related, but with no particular purpose of improving the breed etc.   We believe that this system of mating produces puppies of a lower standard than that of linebreeding.

In relation to the Labrador Retriever puppies from our linebreeding program, they share common quality ancestors including several Labrador Champions, (such as Australian and New Zealand Champions).   With common quality ancestors being at least two generations apart, and mostly three.

The Labrador Retriever puppies from this program are intended to have the traits that are common in these various Champions 'strengthened', and thus producing high quality pups.

Please also note that linebreeding is used in other formal breeding systems and where high quality is desired, such as with horses, etc.

In conclusion, prior to purchasing a Labrador Retriever puppy from a dog breeder, it is suggested that details of their breeding system be obtained and considered.   As this may assist in determining the quality etc of the pups.   And confirmation of this may be obtained from the pedigree certificates etc.
